Filerimos Hill and Monastery

The canyon of Pelekanos River hosts a unique Valley that is named after the Panaxia Quatripunctaria Butterfly. The Valley was found in the 1930s by Italians who developed a beautiful 1 km path that goes through the canyon along with the areas where the butterflies are most densely populated. The first studies were conducted by German entomologist Reinhard Eiger. Very nice day out with not too lengthy journeys to and from each place, the stops were a good length of time to enjoy what was to offer. Butterfly valley has a long trek up with lots of steps with some ok views, but surprisingly I preferred Filerimos as butterfly valley just seemed like a hike. A long stair in the entrance leads up an avenue of cypresses and bougainvillea to the cloister and the foundations of the temple.

The 16-meter / 48 feet imposing concrete cross stands in the middle of the small square. You can even climb up the cross and take in the view from the arms. The settlement of Filerimos Hill goes back very far in time, to the 1500 BC Mycenaean period. It was during this period that the settlement of the area where the town of Ialyssos is located today began. These were probably several small settlements that shared a common administration and an acropolis on the adjacent hill of Filerimos. About 500 years later, the Dorians occupied the site and built the foundations of the present city of Ialyssos. Communication from the travel company was very good, even called on morning of pick up to say they would be 10 minutes late.

The upper part of Filerimos is a large plateau and most of the buildings are found on the eastern side. They include the foundations of a temple, an Early Christian basilica, and a Byzantine church. It’s an easy way to get your bearings, which doesn’t involve you hiring a car or navigating public buses.
